Ross for Less
The real joke in the Ross Avenue name-change controversy is the Three Stooges double head-slap the three Latinos on the city council's Trinity River Corridor Project committee are taking from Mayor Tom Leppert on this.
In the first place, Mayor Pro Tem Elba Garcia talked Steve Salazar and Pauline Medrano into taking a dive on the renaming of Industrial Boulevard to keep Leppert and his handlers on the Citizens Council happy. After the city conducted a poll and the overwhelming first-place vote was for renaming Industrial “Cesar Chavez,” Leppert said the city couldn’t go along with that because a name like Chavez wouldn’t “market the area.”
The Mexican-Americans took that lying down. I’ll bet Medrano’s father, a nationally revered labor leader, rolled over in his grave when she went along on that one. But all three of them did anyway.
The face-saving move was supposed to be a promise to rename Ross Avenue instead. I don’t know what the three Latinos did to deserve face-saving. Normally in American politics, when you let yourself get slapped down, you don’t get a piece of the pie. But anyway, that was the deal: Eat crow on Industrial. Maybe we’ll give you Ross.
Only now Leppert is waffling on Ross. In The News today he sounds kind of iffy about doing a Mexican re-name there too.
This is what you get for knuckling under in America. Nothing.
I don’t like all the bigoted blog posts about how Cesar Chavez had nothing to do with Dallas. Neither did George Washington. But I don’t know why they deserve to win anything on this. Why should everybody else have to get out of the way for people who wouldn’t stand up for themselves when they were called out? Anyway, I’m with Emilio Velasquez Jr.: Let’s rename Industrial as the Trini River Boulevard. Ain’t gonna be no toll road no how. --Jim Schutze
