Like Forrest Gump, one day Dean Karnazes (rhymes with oh-NASS-is) just started running. And so far, he hasn't stopped. If you're looking for a kook crazier than Terrell Owens, show up at the American Airlines Center this morning and witness the absurdity of Karnazes, a man attempting to run 50 marathons in 50 days in 50 different states. And you thought Alfonso Soriano's 40 homers-40 doubles-40 steals was impressive?
Karnazes is an ultra-marathoner, which I think is Belgian for "got a lug nut loose." Today he and some select Dallas fitness freaks paying $100 each are running the same course that two months from today will host the Wellstone Dallas White Rock Marathon. It will be his 24th straight day of running 26.2 miles, talking to some dorky writers, hopping on a bus, crossing state lines, ingesting 6,000 calories, rinsing and repeating. His unprecedented feat is scheduled to climax at the New York City Marathon November 5.
Watch Karnazes here, track his progress here or join me today and suggest some questions for me to ask him. So far all I can come up with is, "Why?" --Richie Whitt
