With the initial sticker shock having subsided and a waiting list already topping 10,000, the Dallas Cowboys are openly happy with ticket sales at their new $1-billion palace in Arlington. But, privately, they’re even more thrilled at the demand for exclusive, elitist suites.
A team source tells me this morning that interest is so overwhelmingly strong that the Cowboys are seriously considering eliminating some traditional seats and building 100 more suites, in addition to the 400 or so already in place. Pricing for the new stadium’s suites hasn’t been released, but here’s betting the range is $100,000 to $1 million. Per season.
Take that, Common Man!
Speaking of irrationally rabid fans with money to burn, you may remember Scott Weidenfeller? He’s the chief marketing officer for Richardson-based Taqua IP Services whose plight I chronicled back in November. Well, he’s made his decision. Like a lot of fans, he’s grudgingly moving to cheaper real estate in the new joint.
Since 1999, he’s owned four tickets on the 35 yard-line at Texas Stadium. But given Jonestown’s hefty prices, he split his commitment in half with two tickets down on the 15.
“I still kept four tickets,” says Weidenfeller, “but I decided to split them with a partner.”
Still, Weidenfeller’s initial outlay is $32,000 ($16,000 apiece for the seat options) in three payments over two years. And that’s before shelling out the $340 per ticket per game, the $50 parking and nachos you just know will be upwards of $15.
In totally -- and I mean totally -- unrelated news, I hate to tug on Superman ‘s cape and all, but this, my friends, is NOT a dunk! One of the coolest, most memorable shots in the history of hoops? Absolutely. But a dunk? Nope. Just sayin’. --Richie Whitt
