Those Who Opposed Bush Presidential Center at SMU Still Opposed to Bush Presidential Center
They won't break ground on the George W. Bush Presidential Center at SMU till November 16, around the time his book's released. But beginning tomorrow locals and road-trippers so interested can sneak peek some of the collectibles in Dubya's prize closet at the Meadows Museum. The exhibit's called "Breaking New Ground: Presenting the George W. Bush Presidential Center," and by now, perhaps, you're aware of the contents: Saddam Hussein's handgun; the bullhorn used when Bush went to Ground Zero on September 14, 2001; the baseball Bush first-pitched in New York at Game 3 of the World Series that year; a letter from Bono; some clothes; etc. Here -- FOX News'll give you the guided tour.
But the Bush bash isn't sitting well with those who opposed the center from the get-go, like the Rev. William K. McElvaney, Professor Emeritus of Preaching and Worship at the Perkins School of Theology. He tells The New York Times today he's less than enthused about the collectibles on display:"It's the approach they've taken all along; it fits their worldview. It's a tragedy for S.M.U. to hitch its star to this." To which Tex Sample, an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church, adds this:
"I hope that a bullhorn will not become the symbol for the entry of the United States into an unjustified war and that a pistol of Saddam Hussein's is not seen as some strange symbol of victory in that horrendous misjudgment. That these should be the symbols of the values and commitments of the Bush administration and should now become the face of Southern Methodist University is cause for alarm."
