Because I like Josh Howard (remember, I used to love him), I’m going to attempt to write this item with a straight face. You, however, knock yourself out. Insert your own marijuana-related punch lines whenever you feel the urge.
Fresh off a horrible and horribly short post-season, Howard is announcing his first annual basketball camp in Dallas, June 23-27 at The Sportsplex on Alpha Road. (Punch-line possibility.) The camp, for kids ages 7 and up, costs $260 and you can sign up by emailing [email protected] or calling (469) 364-4238. Registration only via money order, cashier’s check or cash. No personal checks. (Oh, I could be having a lot of fun with these.)
Proceeds from the camp will benefit The Josh Howard Foundation. (Stop it, this would be too easy.) Campers will receive a jersey, T-shirt, basketball station work and “life skills.” (I shit you not.)
Seriously, I think Josh is a good-hearted, good-timin’ guy who had a bad couple months. Most distressing to me is his play, which seriously regressed after the acquisition of Jason Kidd. Remember, his best friend on the team was Devin Harris, so the guy spent the last half of the season in a mental funk. Inexcusable, but true.
Right before our eyes he declined from All-Star slasher to jump-shooting liability. After his inflammatory comments recently, the NBA will surely be watching his off-season recreational activities. If helping kids helps Josh, good for him. Good for the Mavericks.
In other news, Mavs owner Mark Cuban has a lot to say about the Mavs’ disappointing season, but zero insight on Howard. Hmm. -- Richie Whitt
