Lowell Cannaday and Lupe Valdez have engaged in several lackluster debates in their race for Dallas County sheriff.

The Republican Party paraded a man in a chicken costume outside a Valdez fund-raiser, infusing life into an otherwise boring campaign.

Even though she's an incumbent and a Democrat, Sheriff Valdez leaves nothing to chance as she campaigns on foot along Ellsworth Avenue in North Dallas.

Despite four failed state jail inspections during her administration, Valdez says she has solved overcrowding and understaffing in the jail, along with improving health care and sanitation.

Cannaday is relying on 38 years of law enforcement experience to convince voters that he can "fix an organization that's broke."

On July 15, representatives from four law enforcement associations protested Sheriff Valdez as she faced budgetary cuts from the commissioners court.
