The afternoon shift at Its a Grind:

reinventing the American workplace

Stephen Barley, a barista recovering from a five-and-a-half-year stint at Starbucks, sets out the mornings baked offerings at Its a Grind.

The coffee shops hiring practices encourage employing pretty much anyone in need of a second chance.

What looks like a regular coffee shop is, in fact, a first for Dallasan attempt to create an ethical workplace that pays a living wage.

Cannon Flowers combined his business experience with his knowledge of the nonprofit sector to co-found the Demeter Project, whose first entrepreneurial venture, Its a Grind, became a vehicle to express the projects unique workplace ideology.

Barista Barley has found his niche at Its a Grind, where he receives a living wage, full health benefits, reliable full-time hoursand respect.
