Lois Lillico, now a nurse, was orphaned at 12, when her father died, and virtually grew up at the Buckner Orphans Home, bottom, after that.

Jerre Graves Simmons, orphaned by a murder-suicide, grew up at Buckner, returned later as a teacher and edited a book of Buckner reminiscences.

Sally Hawkins Bingham and her siblings were abandoned as children. Bingham, at Buckner in bottom photo, dealt with the sadness of her childhood by pouring herself into sports.

Vernon Horsley and his brother thought Buckner was the Ritz. His football skills put him through college.

Vernon Horsley is now a retired school principal. He was master of a bootleg key operation at Buckner.
