Three years ago, Erin and John Paul Hossley opened the doors to their Bishop Arts store {neighborhood}. Their symbiotic professions, interior design and architecture, respectively, gave them a leg up on other design/decor stores in the city. After all, they could offer both their services and their good taste. They filled with their store with furniture, decor, jewelry and books all unified by their "fun, whimsical style, and most importantly high quality," says John Paul.
What became obvious in the store's first few years is that the Hossleys don't just have good taste on how to fill a home, they also have a keen eye for what to hang on the walls. Because {neighborhood} isn't just a design store, it also happens to be the only space in the Bishop Arts District proper that hosts regular art exhibitions.
"We wanted our store to be filled with stuff we would want in our own home," says Erin.
"All this art is stuff we like," says John Paul. "Stuff I'd want to hang on my walls."
Down the street there's the Ginger Fox Gallery, which primarily functions as a showcase of Fox's work, and a few doors down sits the occasionally refreshed selection at Artisan's Collective, which makes {neighborhood} the perfect, well, neighbor for these spaces. The Hossleys scope out gallery shows, and Web sites looking for art they love by regional artists and they invite they to show in the store. They have plans to exhibit artists including Pinky Diablo, Clay Stinnett, Tim Kerr, and Industry Print Shop this year.
This weekend the store will open after a remodel, which reorganized the store, adding a 56-foot white wall for the art exhibitions. The first artist to tackle the lengthy space is JMR, a muralist whose work has been popular at Dallas galleries with recent shows at WAAS Gallery and Circuit 12 Contemporary. He's created one of his recognizable black and white murals on the wall, and will also unveil a new line of decorative housewares.
Swing through the store for its grand re-opening at 7 p.m. tomorrow.
