Celebrate the birthday of the awakened one. Buddha, that is. There are more than 350 million Buddhists worldwide, making it the third most practiced religion, and now it's time to get down in honor of the man who started it all: Prince Siddhartha Gautama. Gautama was shielded from witnessing common maladies in his hometown of Nepal, for fear that he would turn into a sage. At 29 years old, he decided to venture out on his own, hoping to find information, understanding and answers to questions he had about birth, life, sickness and death. Eventually, after many hardships, he was enlightened and began teaching his Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path, all of which are centered on living a moral, wise, kind and compassionate life. And, I mean, that's great, but let's not forget about the p-a-r-t-y! The event will include a bathing of the Buddha ceremony, followed by cultural festivities, live music and performances, authentic food and more. The event is free, parking is free and food will be available for purchase. The event will be held Sunday at the International Buddhist Progress Society in Dallas.
