It's not easy to gain in-depth knowledge of Mexico's Tarahumara Indians, who originally retreated into the mountains to avoid Spanish slavery and missionization. The rough terrain has kept the Tarahumara, many of whom still live in mountainside caves, largely isolated. Their wariness of outsiders is well documented, so the fact that photographer Kitty Alice Snead was able to capture them extensively on film is no small feat. Portraits of the Tarahumara opens Saturday in the main gallery of the Bathhouse Cultural Center, 521 E. Lawther Drive. At first we thought it was a joke. No way was Ned Ashton coming all the way from Port Charles to play a concert in Dallas. How could he?
