If I had a nickel for every time I've watched Dazed and Confused, man, I'd be loaded. My friends and I watched it over and over, incessantly quoting our favorite lines. Initially released on fewer than 200 screens, Richard Linklater's flick about coming of age in the summer of 1976 barely broke even at the box office. Later, the movie developed a cult-like following on video. On a recent viewing, I realized how accurately the movie depicted what it feels like to be a kid at a crossroads. The film's rolling-paper-thin plot deals with the ritualized hazing of freshman by the seniors and whether or not Randall "Pink" Floyd will sign the football team's drug-free pledge. Opening on the last day of school, the movie follows the ensemble cast of characters through the day as their paths overlap and ultimately converge for a beer bust at one of Austin's moon towers. I missed seeing it when the film was initially released in theaters. Like most people I watched it the first time on a friend's couch. Catch it on the big screen midnight Friday and Saturday at the Inwood Theatre, 5458 W. Lovers Lane…where you, too, can see it on a couch. Call 214-764-9106 or visit landmarktheatres.com.
