Here's one more reason to eschew the cineplex down the street: The Magnolia Bar Gallery (located inside the Magnolia Theatre in the West Village) is putting the art back into the art house theater. In an attempt to bring more attention to the regional art scene, the Magnolia Bar Gallery offers exhibitions from local artists such as Vladimir Zimakov, a 1996 graduate of Booker T. Washington Arts Magnet, who presents Musicians and Inventors: The Beginning, a new collection of paintings. Russian-born Zimakov has a special knack for illustrations, which have donned the covers of everything from books and magazines to CDs. His interest in publication design is one rarely seen these days, making his work all the more interesting and accessible. (Picture a pen-and-ink Edward Gorey illustration fusing with Kafka and you'll begin to understand.) Next time you go see a movie at the Magnolia, get there early, because there's more to a theater lobby than giant cardboard cut-outs of Tom Hanks. The Musicians and Inventors: The Beginning reception is June 16 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and all art will be on view through July 27 during regular theater hours at the Magnolia Bar Gallery,3699 McKinney Ave. Call 214-764-9106 or visit vladimirzimakov.com.
