You ever wonder why a professional novelist can spend every day for years doing nothing while a single mom with a full-time job can write a bestseller in a couple of months? Or why sometimes a composer with unlimited resources can just plain suck compared to a man with a piano? It might sound like a piece of doublethink but there is such a thing as freedom in limitation. And when an artist is disallowed, or disallows him- or herself certain methods, then it enables them to focus on a single medium or single concept without getting lost in infinite possibility. The ongoing exhibit INK, Inc, currently hanging at the Holly Johnson Gallery (1411 Dragon St.), features numerous works that illustrate this point, using only ink as the primary medium. John Adelman creates figures that play by the rules he creates using logic and mathematics, while Isabel Albrecht's horizontal/vertical forms create the illusion of vibration and movement. Other artists include Astrid Bowlby, Ernesto Caivano, Todd Camplin and Jacob El Hanani. The gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays; the exhibit ends August 14.
