Ten years on, it's nothing short of mind-boggling that the Great Swing Scare of 1997 ever happened in the first place. I'm sure you all remember the horror—swing dance nights at your favorite bars, frat boys incessantly quoting Vince Vaughan's character from Swingers, and of course, left-field radio hits from the Squirrel Nut Zippers, the Brian Setzer Orchestra and the Cherry Poppin' Daddies. It's enough to almost make us pine for those other great scares of the late '90s: the Great Boy Band Scare (I think we’re still feeling this one, unfortunately) and the Great Electronica Scare (you know, back when Rolling Stone and Spin were ready to make Atari Teenage Riot and the Prodigy the biggest bands in the world). Amazingly, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, whom you might remember from the club scene in Swingers, is still playing this stuff 10 years later. Watch them milk the last powdery, spoiled drops from their 15 minutes of fame at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the House of Blues. Tickets are $24.50 to $35. Call 214-373-8000 or visit ticketmaster.com.
Sat., June 30, 8:30 p.m.
