Aaron Neville's Super Bowl performance of the national anthem bordered on treason. In fact, if I were the New Orleans singer, I'd be worried that Dubya would have interpreted my inane warbling as a direct threat to the American way. I'd be afeared of being branded an evildoer. But for people less concerned with national security and more concerned with national recognition, his performance could be nothing short of encouraging, since anthem-singing auditions are being held this Tuesday at Lone Star Park. Heck, my cat's got a better chance of making the cut than Neville does at this point. Then again, Whiskey (also a N.O. native, ironically) does have perfect pitch for a feline. About 100 hopefuls are expected, a third of whom will get singing gigs. Auditions last from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the horse track, 1000 Lone Star Parkway, in Grand Prairie. Reserve your spot by calling 972-263-RACE.
Tue., Feb. 28, 11:30 a.m.-8 p.m.
