Take Pride In The Power

This, like so many other times in history, is a tough time to be a girl. We ladies need to stick together, and I'm not just talking about all the single ladies throwing their hands up. Our sisters and daughters are searching for role models in TV shows and the covers of magazines, and there just isn't much there that's worth looking up to. Luckily, Dallas has a unique institution right here in town that offers girls (and grown-up ladies too!) a look at women's history in a way that would make any girl proud and hopeful for her future. In fact, this institution, The Women's Museum: An Institute for the Future, 3800 Parry Ave., has a particularly topical exhibition on display now through December 31. Changing the Face of Power: Women in the U.S. Senate is an exhibit of photographs by Melina Mara that opened at the Smithsonian Institution in 2003 and offers a behind-the-scenes look at female politicians. Developed by the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at UT Austin, the exhibition also features audio presentations of interviews with ten of the senators, conducted by journalist Helen Thomas, as well as a video presentation of Mara's photographs with narration by Mara herself.
