Theater season is in full swing. Here are a few picks for your month.
Ongoing through October 19: Rocky Horror Show It looks like Dallas Theater Center has a hit on its hands with its season opener. A reboot of the cult classic, Rocky Horror Show, theater critic Elaine Liner says, "It's huge. It's loud. Cleavage heaves and nipples sparkle. And that's just on the men." Throw toilet paper, taunt the actors and sing along to the "Time Warp." Tickets, $18-$100, are at 214-880-0202.
October 10 - November 2: Bonnie & Clyde On the heels of a great production of the new musical Dogfight, WaterTower Theatre tackles another new musical. When it debuted on Broadway, Bonnie & Clyde lasted a measly 36 performances before closing. But Liner puts hopes in the talents of WaterTower Theatre's casting of Kayla Carlyle in the titular role saying, "she's gorgeous and can sing like mad. So there's hope for at least a star turn."
October 17 - November 2: Teotl: the sand show Young movement artist Jeffrey Colangelo and his Prism Co. continue to explore new textures and materials in his psychical theater pieces. His newest work, created in collaboration with Cara Mia Theatre, centers around Aztec deities submerged in the sands of Mexico. This wordless performance is billed as "featuring masks, live music, movement, and an epic battle with Aztec weaponry in a giant sand box." See it in a Trinity Groves warehouse at 500 Singleton Blvd. for $17.
October 24 - November 2The Golden Apple Hilariously this October, there is a musical adaptation of Lord of the Rings at Fort Worth's Circle Theatre and Lyric Stage mounts a production of a 1950s musical based on Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. We're hedging our bets on Lyric Stage's The Golden Apple this month, because they've proven time and again that they know how to stage an old musical. You may not be able to name a song from the show, but there's something magical about discovering a new musical... and something even more magical about letting Lyric Stage discover a new musical.
October 25 - November 15: Flower in the Machine Described as "a powerful play about love in a dystopian society," Ochre House Theater's newest musical, Flower in the Machine, by Kevin Grammer promises all the things we've come to love about this splendid little company, which we recently named the Best Small Theater in Dallas: music, fine acting, and hilarious dialogue. Tickets are $15.
