Cats are better than dogs. Oh, I know you're thinking that's just my opinion, but you're wrong. Having just dog-sat for a friend, I can prove it. To wit: Cats don't smell; they don't make you feel like the orphanage guy in David Copperfield when you eat; and not once in two decades of cat ownership have I had to pluck a warm, wet pile o' poop from a neighbor's yard. Nevertheless, you dog owners are a devoted, giving bunch, which is why you'll want to check out Operation Kindness' 13th annual Dog Day Afternoon, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Bob Woodruff Park in Plano. Highlights include an honor walk, pet photos, a low-cost microchip clinic and several contests: "Doggie Bulldozer," "Barkin' and Bobbin," "Fastest Tail in Texas," "Stupid Pet Tricks," "Best Costume" and "Best Pooch Smooch." Pretty undignified, but that's dogs for ya. Registration is $15--plus $5 for the contests--and begins at 8 a.m. Proceeds benefit Operation Kindness' no-kill shelter. The park is located at 2601 San Gabriel Drive in Plano. Visit operationkindness.org. Cats rule!
Sat., June 9, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
