If you live in our fair city, you're familiar with the Mixmaster -- the sometimes-sizzling, sometimes-icy jumble of asphalt that is the intersection of Interstates 30 and 35, along with a few downtown on- and off-ramps thrown in for good measure. You're also probably aware that Dallas has art and culture scenes bustling with traffic and passion that could rival that junction at any given rush hour.

So, please welcome the Dallas Observer's latest edition to its Interwebs family, the sister to Unfair Park, Sportatorium, DC-9 At Night and City of Ate, named for the iconic intersection, but with a punny nod to mixed media and mastery of the arts. After all, what kind of Observer blog would we be without our back-handed Dallas pride and punny nods?

Here, we'll aim to give you a glimpse of all areas of Dallas culture, an expansion on our dead-tree product so we can better preview, cover and discuss all the things you're seeing and doing out there. Art, crafts, dance, books, comics, fashion, design, film, television, theater, photography, pop culture, geek culture and more: The Mixmaster wants to deliver it all right here to you.

Today's posts present just a sampling of what's to come, but it's a fun sampling: Check out a recap of a New York Times bestseller signing, find out what the audience is saying during intermission at the Dallas Theater Center's Cabaret, view photos from the venerable Barry Whistler Gallery's 25th anniversary shindig and peep the first of one of our regular features, Fine Lookin' Piece (we'll let you go investigate that one on your own). Oh, and see what happens when someone serves a comic papers...on stage...mid-act. Yeah.

As we build up The Mixmaster over the next few weeks, we're confident you'll see it grow from a fledgling blog to a veritable clusterfuck of arts and culture. Because anything less just wouldn't live up to its name.
