Gothic literature and even Tim Burton films are proof enough that though something may be dark or tragic, one can still find beauty in it or make stunning art out of it. In that vein, Deep Ellum's venerable Kettle Art Gallery is featuring the works of local artists Loretta Gonzales, Claudia Rivera, Emily Donjuan, and Alice Lomas in an exhibition titled Dark & Lovely. The show features the varying works of these four artists as they each interpret, via different modes and mediums, their idea of things that are both dark and beautiful. Alice Lomas' series depicts cupid in two very different forms while Claudia Rivera's series shows different aspects of life and love from behind the camera phone lens. Emily Donjuan is a master of innocent yet disturbing soft sculptures that hauntingly counter Loretta Gonzales' series paying tribute to the some 400 plus children murdered each year by their mothers. As always, admission is free and gallery hours are from 7 to 10 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays. For more information, visit kettleart.com.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 7-10 p.m. Starts: May 26. Continues through June 16, 2011
