In high school, I won a Martin Luther King Jr. essay contest about diversity and was featured—baggy pants, bangs and all—in the local newspaper. I'd forgotten all about it, but when I was home for the holidays I found the old news clipping laminated and posted in my old room. Turns out Mom knows a teacher who uses my essay in her classroom. Scary. Even so, I'd have jumped at the chance to play the Martin Luther King Jr. orator, which a group of kids will do Thursday at the First Baptist Church Criswell Center, 1707 San Jacinto St. The final round of speech competitions honoring King begins at 11:30 a.m. The theme is, "If you could share your dream with Dr. King, what would it be?"
