Kelly Garrett Rathbone has a habit she can't shake. The faces, heads and creatures that live in the dark corners of her imagination? She sculpts them, again and again. "My sculptures make up my personal cabinet of curiosities," says the 26-year-old artist, who recently finished an artist residency at the Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts in Newcastle, Maine. Each bust shares a characteristic feature, maybe a knotted face or a tubular beard in pastel or faded coloring, but each is unique. Some sculptures are even delightfully eerie, like "Two Weeping Wise Men," which features two heads--one with yellow-colored skin and deep tear ducts, the other with two knobby horns. Looking at the various sculptures is like being inside a dream on a hot summer day under a big shade tree. Even though Rathbone was born in Singapore to American parents, she grew up mostly in the States and considers herself a Texan "by choice."
