When I first heard about National Public Gardens Day, the name conjured up Karl Marx's wettest dream. I envisioned men, women and children of all stripes coming together to plant flowers and vegetables, comrades with an equal stake in their garden's success. Turns out it's an annual, nationwide celebration, locally held at the Dallas Arboretum, to raise awareness of public gardens and their social benefits. While Mr. Marx wouldn't be thrilled about entry fees, at least the money's going to a dot-org with an environmental mission. Attendees also have a chance to win an in-home consultation about their own gardens. National Public Gardens Day takes place Friday at the Dallas Arboretum, 8525 Garland Road. Call 214-515-6500 or visit dallasarboretum.org.
