When I read that the Cara Mía Theatre Company was finally bringing Martín to the stage, I could hardly contain my excitement. Could it really be true? Would Martin Lawrence's witty FOX sitcom finally be getting the theatrical treament? Would Shenehneh finally get her moment in the sun? Alas, it was not to be. As you could probably tell by the accent above the "i," Martín is not, in fact, a play about a young black couple and their goofy friends but rather a stage adaptation of an epic poem by Chicano writer Jimmy Santiago Baca, perhaps best-known as the writer of Bound by Honor, everyone's favorite Chicano prison gang movie. The plays tells the story of a man coming to grips with his mixed heritage as he roams the great Southwest, eventually accepting both his Chicano and Native American roots. Martín plays Friday through September 17 at the Rosewood Center for Family Arts, 5928 Skillman St. Showtimes are 8:15 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
