This is not your everyday Billboard chart. Each week, we'll tell you which bands are selling in the fine record shops in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, where we consumers of music have impeccable taste.
Lance Price, CD Source owner, says a recently turned solo artist with a classic sound is making way in the charts this week. "Johnny Marr released his debut solo album at the age of 49," says Price. "Marr was the lead guitarist and co-songwriter with Morrissey for the Smiths. He has also been a member of Electronic, The The, and Modest Mouse. His album has gotten great reviews and is supposed to be very 'Smiths sounding'."
Mark Church, sales associate at Good Records, noticed some close competition in this weeks sales. "Thom Yorke, Nick Cave, and Johnny Marr battle it out for chart superiority, and it looks like the one with the most formats wins," says Church. "Seven out of 10 items here are vinyl so it looks like vinyl really is back with a vengeance."
Some consensus formed at CD Source and Good Records this week with a super group reaching the top. "Atoms for Peace was by far our biggest selling title when all of the different configurations are added up," says Price. "It is a new band featuring Thom Yorke, Nigel Godrich, Mauro Refosco, Joey Waronker and Flea. They came together originally by playing in support of Thom's Grammy nominated album The Eraser. The deluxe CD features a fold out accordion deluxe package with foil, and is limited to only 5000."
Bill Wisener, Bill's Records owner, was able to attend a concert of one of his top selling artists and long time friend, Ben Harper. "Ben sent me a ticket last minute for his show in Chicago, and I got over there without hesitation," says Wisener. "It was a really great concert, and was worth the non-stop traveling to get there."
