By Way of Joe Ely, Rhett Miller Helps Remind Us How This Blog Got Its Name.

Every few months or so, it just so happens that someone will pop up on our radar and ask us how this here blog got its name. To be honest: We're not quite sure who picked it. Our memories here in the music department tend to be hazy. Maybe it was Noah W. Bailey? Sounds about right. It was before I got to town in early '08, I know that much.

Anyway, to the point of bringing all this up: Seems that every time we interview one of The Flatlanders (Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely and Butch Hancock), the topic returns -- namely because, well, yes, "DC-9 at Night" is a reference to a couple of lines in a Gilmore-penned Flatlanders song called "Dallas." The portion in question: "Have you ever seen Dallas from a DC-9 at night? Oh, Dallas is a jewel, Dallas is a beautiful sight."

So there you go. It might be a little confusing on its own, but we like it. It sure stands out among all the generically named music blogs out there, that's for sure. And others dig it, too -- like the dudes in the band Dawes, who gave us a shout-out for the name on Twitter a couple months back.

Anyway, when Joe Ely was in town a few weeks back for a gig at the Granada, naturally, we asked him about the song. "It has to be the most requested song on every tour," he told us, before going on to note that he thought the Old 97's did a particularly good take on it.

Which brings us to the video we've posted after the jump. The very day we posted that Ely interview, Old 97's frontman Rhett Miller was performing a solo gig at the Belmont Hotel. And, after having seen the shout-out from Ely, Miller decided to perform the song during his show. Nice choice, we'd say -- especially given the gorgeous backdrop of the downtown Dallas skyline seen at the Belmont's stage.
