Dallas Rappers Dropped a Christmas Haul of New Music Over the Weekend

If you were busy last week taking care of that last-minute shopping, traveling to Grandma’s house or just decided to take a break from the Internet for the sake of some family time for Christmas, there’s a chance you missed the wealth of releases the city’s local talent put out over the holidays. It’s OK, though; we’ve got it all here for you. And if there’s anything we learned this weekend it's that there really are no days off for these hustling artists. In this batch of releases we saw new music from some old familiar faces in Mga Czar and Rikki Blu as well as some continued work from the city’s new wave of artists in Post Malone, G.U.N, Pat Ron and more.


Mga Czar - Right Hand of God

Two years after their collaboration on Lord of the Thunder, Mga Czar and producer Lonestarr are back with another release titled Right Hand of God. Whereas Lord of the Thunder emitted an aggressive, imposing energy, this time around Right Hand of God offers a more reflective, carefully calculated approach rich with proclamations all carried out by Czar’s effortless yet assertive flow. Over the weekend, Czar tweeted this may be his last project, but we certainly hope that isn’t the case. With this release, it’s audible that he still has a lot to offer.


Rikki Blu - Pleasant Grove EP

Much as with Mga Czar, it’s been two years since Rikki Blu’s last project, XXXIII, which was his debut release. On a new five-song EP produced by Free P, Blu raps over minimalist beats and gives us bleak tales of his city with piercing lines like “Pleasant Grove/But it nothing pleasant ‘bout the Grove” and “It’s like night time all day ‘round here/Ain’t no fear ‘round here.” The Pleasant Grove EP feels like a tease because this is a tremendous project that plays through too fast, which will ensure that you’ll have it on repeat at least a few times.


Raw Elementz - More Sounds From Outside

Biding time until the release of his album, Raw Elementz released a collection of songs from previous projects like Vintage Bars 2 to create his More Sounds From Outside EP. The 12-song collection falls right in line with Elementz’s old-school, wordsmith aesthetic and jazz-inspired sonics that his fans have grown to know over his years in the game. While we may have experienced some unseasonably warm weather of late, now that it’s a little colder out More Sounds From Outside should make for an easy listen on a calm night.




Post Malone - "Boy Bandz" & "Embarrassed"

Post Malone is living large these days. In the video for “Boy Bandz,” Malone shows off his newest and glitziest jewels and L.A. lifestyle with lines like “Got NSYNC dancing on my neck/And these Cubans cost a motherfuckin’ check/Got boy bands like I’m Lance Bass.” The downtempo track was produced by heralded producer Shlohmo, so it’s pretty safe to say Malone is embedding himself nicely into the forefront of the music scene. And not only that, but he’s also continuing his trendsetting ways with the new lingo in “Boy Bandz.” That wasn't his only new music over the weekend, either. Malone was featured on Gucci Mane's "Embarrassed," which also features RiFF RAFF and Lil B. Post Malone is doing just fine. 




G.U.N - “Go In” and “Options”

G.U.N released a flurry of music over the holidays. First up were two videos of his for “Go In” and “Options.” Then, over the weekend, Key! released his Martin Luther Key! mixtape which features a track from G.U.N titled “Just Wanna.” It can be found here. The high volume of music G.U.N put out was also followed by an announcement that his self-titled debut album will be released February 6.


Pat Ron - “/95/”

During his recent trip to New York City last week for an opening slot on The Smokers Club Holiday Show headlined by Joey Badass with an appearance from A$AP Rocky, Pat Ron and his collaborator Ea$e released a track titled “/95/.“ The smooth, snarling track falls in line with Ron’s “Backpack Boy 2,” which we fell in love with some months ago. Pat Ron and Ea$e are making the right moves and we look forward to seeing what else they cook up.


Herrick & Hooley - Holiday EP

If you’ve ever stumbled across their Twitter, you’ll know that Herrick & Hooley are a trio of funny, goofy dudes just looking to have a good time. But their music is anything but that. Time and time again this year they’ve released projects that are most definitely worth your time and boast smart, sharp music.


Star Music - “No Chill”

Star Music’s “No Chill” is a chip-on-the-shoulder track checking the prerogative of everyone around him. It’s also the lead track from his recently released Calculated EP. The approach Star Music takes on the track works for him as he delivers a confident and well-executed flow about his efforts and master plan while mocking those who indulge in the flashy materials over hard work.


Coach Tev - “Chrissy’s Interlude”

Two months ago, Coach Tev met a “cutie” named Chrissy, as he tells it. Instead of asking for her number on the spot, he figured he’d see her again and let serendipity do the rest. But the meeting affected Tev and inspired this interlude, which is dedicated to Chrissy. There’s a happy ending here, too: Upon the song’s release last week, the producer of the track happened to see Chrissy’s Twitter account retweeted onto his timeline and he took the opportunity to share the song with her. Serendipity at its best.


Trap Boy Freddy - Trap Boy Freddy Krueger 

Don’t sleep on Trap Boy Freddy. It might be a nightmare you won’t wake up from. Or so we’d assume from the namesake of his Trap Boy Freddy Krueger mixtape released on Christmas. On the 12-song mixtape, Freddy delivers a rambunctious, infectious energy that’s reminiscent of Young Thug at moments. At the same time you can still hear remnants of Dallas’ old boogie movement in his music.
