Holy late '70s, early '80s mellow rock flashback, Batman!
Tonight's bill at the Meyerson Symphony Center features two giants of smooth cheese: Australia's legendary Air Supply and San Antonio's own Christopher Cross.
Back when I was just getting into high school, you couldn't make it half a block in your car without being "blessed" by such slick and tacky fodder as Air Supply's "I'm All Out of Love" and "Lost in Love" or Cross' equally saccharine "Sailin'" and "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)."
Although Air Supply had a lengthier stay in the upper regions of the pop charts, Cross actually had the best song with "Ride Like the Wind." At least that song had a pulse. Still, it's hard to deny the sales figures that both Air Supply and Cross accumulated in those soft rock heydays.
Those 40-, 50- and 60-year-olds looking for another chance to rekindle the romance with their significant other can do so this evening at the Meyerson. Just don't look for yours truly to be there.
