Canadian alternative country singer-songwriter Fred Eaglesmith seems to make it to our area a couple of times a year--and that, my friends, is a very good thing.

Hell, as a matter of fact, Eaglesmith was just at the Granada Theater on January 29. But just about any time is a good excuse to catch him and his fine band. Over the course of his career, the 52-year old Eaglesmith has released 17 albums of unflinchingly honest, bare bones country and folk.

His best effort was probably 2004's Dusty, a record that featured, of all things, casio beats underneath the more typical sounds of mandolins and steel guitar.

Cooler still is the fact that Eaglesmith is kind of a renaissance man--a singer, songwriter, comedian, painter and actor. If you catch him live tonight at Dan's Silverleaf in Denton, you'll see how he incorporates all those things into his performance.

Denton's own Isaac Hoskins opens things up; and much like Eaglesmith, Hoskins knows his way around a fiery set of honest-to-a-fault country and rock.

Taken together, I don't see how there could be a better set of tunesmiths performing anywhere else in North Texas tonight.
