A year ago, Michael Gira, band leader of industrial and experimental rock outfit Swans, announced on his band's Myspace page that, after a 13-year hiatus, "Swans are not dead." And he wasn't just spitting game: The band reunited and released their first studio recorded album since 1996 in 2010. And My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to The Sky, as the new disc was called, proved itself surprisingly mature album for a band that was once well-known for their rambunctious and grotesque stage performances.
The album is, however, not a complete departure from form. The opening track, "No Words/No Thoughts" could have easily been a track from one of their earlier albums, with the experimental church bell noises sounding off at the beginning of the track and fading into Swans' trademark doom-and-gloom industrial sound.
So, to promote this latest album, and to prove to the rest of the world that they are, in fact, still alive, Swans have embarked on their first tour since 1998. They'll be arriving at Dallas' South Side Music Hall this Saturday night to blow out our collective eardrums.
