The Orbans might be the best band to come out of Fort Worth in a short while. After years of sharpening his songwriting in various bands (Thief, The Lifters), singer, Peter Black has finally finished his best album yet: When We Were Wild. Tonight, the album (which features this song) will earn its release at Lola's in Fort Worth.
And as much as The Orbans' hooks are rattling around in our brains, there are other shows going on this weekend. Here's a look at some that you may or may not have already read about right here this past week.
On Friday, at the top of the Golden Triangle, The Slow Burners, American Werewolf Academy, and Deep Snapper will perform at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios. And, in Dallas proper, at Trees, Black Tusk, Zoroaster, Maleveller and Four Days to Burn will melt faces.
On Saturday, at AllGood Cafe, Doug Burr folks around along with Amanda Shires, and just a few blocks over, The Happy Bullets, Astronomers and Andrew Tinker will have a good old time at the Double Wide. Meanwhile, reunited '90s Dallas act Shallow Reign will headline the Kessler Theater with support bands The Cush and Mike Graff, and at The Door in Dallas, Every Avenue, Sing It Loud, The Secret Handshake, and There For Tomorrow will fight to take the tweens attention off of these. Lastly, don't forget about that free Angie Stone show.
LATE ADD: Have you guys seen the bill for the Electric Daisy Carnival going on at Fair Park's Centennial Building on Saturday? Kinda pricey at $55 a pass, but damn: DJ sets from Moby, Benny Benassi, Rusko, Kaskade, Klever, MSTRKRFT's JFK and others on four stages? P-to-the-A-R-T-Y.
And, on Sunday, as always, Ricki Derek will do his Sinatra thing at The Cavern.
More weekend shows after the jump...
Classical Mystery Tour
Friday, June 18, at Forth Worth Botanic Garden
Concerts in the Garden has become a summer staple in Fort Worth. Yes, some of the shows are cheesy, I'm looking at you Swing Night. But The Classical Mystery Tour definitely stands out. Four Beatles impersonators are backed by the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, and it actually turns out to be awesome.
Concrete Blonde
Friday, June 18, at Granada Theater
Concrete Blonde is celebrating the 20th anniversary edition of their album Bloodletting with a tour they're calling "The Vampires Rise Summer 2010" tour. Expect to see a lot of Twilight fans there.
Darktown Strutters
Friday, June 18, at City Tavern
The Darktown Strutters are a pretty out-there dance band--at least on the first few listens. But as each song progresses, and layers of synths and keyboard pads are added on, the songs become quite a bit more dense and enjoyable.
Ishi, STEW, PVC Street Gang
Friday, June 18, at Double Wide
Where the Darktown Strutters are a little out there, Ishi is a pretty straightforward dance band. The buzz might be dying down a little, but their dance parties are still undeniably fun.
The King Bucks
Friday, June 18, at Adair's
Danny Balis and company have found an interesting juxtaposition between the Dallas rock scene and old-school honkeytonk country. Oh, and there's drinking in there somewhere too.
Sabra Laval, Little Birds, Sans Soleil, Sunnybrook, Shiny Around The Edges
Friday, June 18, at The Schoolhouse
This should be a pretty chilled-out house show. There's not a weak artist on the bill, actually. Just drink some coffee before you go. It might get mellow.
Ian Moore & The Lossy Coils, Deadman, Fate Lions
Saturday, June 19, at Granada Theater
Ian Moore has been touring for years and years, and the Granada seems to be his preferred Dallas venue. He always puts on a solid show. Deadman and Fate Lions round out a really good bill.
Lovedrug, All The Day Holiday, The First Hundred Years, Courrier
Saturday, June 19, at Prophet Bar
Ohio's Lovedrug has been in that not-quite-a-Christian-band rut since their inception. Their ethereal pop-rock may have peaked a few years back, but they still put on a good show, too.
Bad Design, The Prids, The Soft Tags
Saturday, June 19, at The Cavern
Denton post-punk act Bad Design is helping out Portland shoegaze act The Prids, who are on tour in support of their new record Chronosynchlastic. Unrelated: The Prids record label, Velvet Blue Music, also put out Doug Burr's Oh Ye Devastator and Telegraph Canyon's The Tide and The Current.
RTB2, Spooky Folk, Fox & The Bird
Saturday, June 19, at Hailey's Club
Young guys play the blues.
Johhny Winter, Mike Zito
Sunday, June 20, at Granada Theater
Old guys play the blues.
...and that's it from us. We'll see you back here on Monday!
