At the tail end of last year, seemingly out of absolutely nowhere, D'angelo released an album, Black Messiah. Well, not entirely out of nowhere: It was his first in 14 years, which is a long time to wait for music from such a gifted and talented man, and for years there were rumors that would finally release a follow-up to the majestic Voodoo. But for years, those rumors came to nothing.
Living in America in 2014 seemed to make the difference, though. D'angelo felt a sense of urgency with police brutality making Black Messiah in part a protest record. "The Charade" is D'angelo frenetically pointing to the sky with curled lips saying, "The jig is up." But, songs like "Really Love" prove that there will be at least a slight increase of births in America come September and October. Among other accolades, it topped The Village Voice's annual Pazz & Jop critics poll.
Not to be overlooked here is that this is a huge catch for the upstart Bomb Factory, which made such a big splash last month with its grand (re)opening party headlined by local R&B queen Erykah Badu. There was plenty of talk of the revived venue being a "game changer," which is perhaps a little premature, but there's no doubt that it brings enormous potential to the city.
And this is the just type of show to prove the point. D'Angelo is just the type of highly coveted show that we're particularly excited to see in Deep Ellum that wouldn't have been possible just a few months ago. Start your engines folks, the tour for the critically acclaimed album Black Messiah is just around the corner, and it stops here on Tuesday, June 16.
