Steer clear of Addison this weekend, because a comedy cold front's bringing copious amounts of unfunny to the city. Deep Ellum, however, will be covered with a thundercloud unleashing buckets of laughs on the neighborhood. Skies are clear for comedy in Tarrant County, and look out for heavy gusts of comic debauchery on Sunday night.
Friday
Do not pass go. Do not collect $200. Do not use trite Monopoly references. Just go see J.B. Smoove, a.k.a. Leon Black on Curb Your Enthusiasm, at Hyena's Arlington. Local legend Gary Hood, Arlington's own comedy Mr. Miyagi, opens. Mozan from K104 features. (Note: Smoove is not doing the early show on Saturday, so go late if you want to see him then.)
Gary Owen is at the Addison Improv. Hopefully, you don't know him from his film credits: Little Man and Daddy Day Care. If you must be in Addison tonight, you're better off going to Sherlock's and trying to put your piece in something warm and drunk.
Saturday
Head down to Deep Ellum for the second installment of "Good Comedy at the AllGood Café." The inimitable Dave Little, the unbeatable Aaron Aryanpur, the unfathomable Jeremy Procter-Smith and the overwhelming Ravi Kiran are all on the bill. I'll be hosting the show, which starts at 9 p.m. Get there earlier if you want dinner—and if you know anything about how delicious the AllGood is, you will. Since it's my birthday today, I get to also tell you that we're heading to the Monkey Bar after the show to celebrate 24 years of yours truly, and I want Toots to come buy me a birthday shot.
In Fort Worth, Hyena's has Matt Sadler, the winner of HBO's Aspen Comedy Talent Search headlines, and deliciously sarcastic local Tommy Vaughn features.
Sunday
Stumble back over to Deep Ellum. Reno's Chop Shop and Grill—a biker bar—hosts a damn fine Sunday night gig. Paul Varghese will do three hours of crowd work and the bartender will show you her tits at least four times. The fun begins at 7 p.m. -- Andrea Grimes
