What with all this puppet-, 35 Conferette-, Wilco-, Starplex- and KXT-related excitement of late, we've let a few other noteworthy news items slip through the cracks. After the jump, we remedy that -- bullet-point style!
- Pitchfork went ahead and reviewed the debut full-length from Denton expats Fergus & Geronimo this week, giving the disc, called Unlearn, a solid 7.2 rating. Much of the review, though serves as an introduction to the band and its snarky ways. Here's all you pretty much need to know from it, as written by Pitchfork scribe Larry Fitzmaurice: "... don't come to this record expecting cohesion or form; you're not going to find much of it here. It's worth charging through Unlearn's varied territory, though."
- Yesterday afternoon, Stereogum debuted the first single off True Widow's coming-in-March sophomore album, As High As The Highest Heavens And From The Center To The Circumference Of The Earth -- one of our most anticipated albums of 2011, as you no doubt know by now. The song, called "Skull Eyes," sees bassist Nikki Cage taking lead vocals and trading harmonies with guitarist Dan Phillips -- a formula we'd already seen on the band's debut album in the form of, perhaps, that disc's strongest cut, "Duelist." Nonetheless, this heavy, and yet still melodically beautiful, new track certainly bodes well for what's to come on the rest of the album. So go download the song already.
- In case you missed it, Robert revealed yesterday on Unfair Park that, a few days before the Super Bowl, Gene Simmons will be receiving a key to the City of Dallas. Seriously.
- I honestly haven't been paying attention much to this year's American Idol goings-on. But I do know this much: At least one Dallas area contestant has been given the pass to Hollywood so far in the early audition round. Her name: Sarah Sellers. She's from Richardson. And, yup, that's her at the top of this post. Not bad, right? Better than this guy, for sure.
