Spring is a great season for music around here. Just when you've recovered from Denton's NX35 and Austin's SXSW music festivals—not to mention a barrage of road shows—Dallas hits you with two amazing parties on National Record Store Day.
And, turns out, both Good Records (1808 Greenville Ave.) and Bill's Records (1317 S. Lamar St.) are celebrating more than just Saturday's holiday: Good will have 10 candles (or multicolored light bulbs) on its cake as it rings in 10 years of business; meanwhile, local record-store owner/legend Bill Wisener is celebrating his 65th birthday (again).
To commemorate its celebration, Good Records boasts a lineup of 23 bands coming at you "live from the Astroturf." Because of last year's neighborhood complaints, the concert has been moved completely indoors on two stages (one in the store, the other in the shuttered venue next door). Headliners This Will Destroy You will finish the party at 1 a.m., but the day is sprinkled with an array of the area's best artists, including Doug Burr, Telegraph Canyon and many others.
Among those others? Local hip-hop trio Dem Southernfolkz and Springfield, Missouri's Ha Ha Tonka—but they'll be pulling double duty on this day, performing shows at both Good and Bill's. At Bill's, those two will join a rather eclectic mix, which also features American Idol's Jason Castro, who finishes the night pretty early with a 9 p.m. set.
I guess after a few 65th birthdays, staying out past 9 o'clock is as wild and crazy as it gets.
