Hey, remember back in February when Tim DeLaughter confirmed a whole bunch of rumors to us? Namely, that he was starting a new band, and also that he'd be releasing new Polyphonic Spree material and some solo efforts in the near future?
Well, good, because that information is pretty pertinent these days, what with sources close to the new, still-unnamed band telling us that the new DeLaughter project is expected to make to make its live debut sometime this Summer-- like, say, July or so.
Surely, that makes the teaser image to the right, just sent our way courtesy the folks at the Granada Theater, all the more interesting -- and not just because, hey, we'd love to see a festival curated by local blog heroes Gorilla Vs. Bear, but because, yes, the folks behind that site are indeed noted Tripping Daisy and DeLaughter fans.
Kind of have to think these two things are connected, right? If so, awesome. If not, no big deal. Especially since the folks at the Dallas Museum of Art have just announced that the Polyphonic Spree will be playing a free show on their Ross Avenue plaza on Friday, June 17, as part of their Late Nights at the DMA series -- and even more so since, buried in the bottom of the press release, the band announces that the band will have new material to share this summer, and even some new Christmas material to share come the fall. Dallas Museum of Art Presents The Polyphonic Spree

DALLAS, TX - May 9, 2011 - The Dallas Museum of Art today announced that Dallas-based symphonic rock group The Polyphonic Spree will headline a free summer concert on June 17. This "main stage" event will be part of the Museum's Late Night program, a series offered on the third Friday of each month, when the Museum is open until midnight. The Polyphonic Spree concert at the DMA's June Late Night will also be a highlight of the annual Summer Block Party in the Dallas Arts District, which is held with the Crow Collection of Asian Art and the Nasher Sculpture Center and takes place both outside on Flora Street and inside the three museums.
The Polyphonic Spree will perform on the DMA's Ross Avenue Plaza on Friday, June 17, at 9:00 p.m. Inside the Museum, visitors can participate in additional Late Night activities, including films, performances, tours, and more, all of which are included in general admission to the Museum.
"We are thrilled to host The Polyphonic Spree in concert as part of the popular Late Nights series, which offers an array of programs and activities focused on the visual, performing, and literary arts for the entire family," said Judy Conner, Director of Marketing and Communications for the Dallas Museum of Art.
The Polyphonic Spree was formed in 2000 by Tim DeLaughter, and the group now includes more than twenty members. The band's sound relies on a variety of vocal and instrumental color by featuring a choir, flute, trumpet, trombone, violin, viola, cello, percussion, piano, guitars, bass, drums, electronic keyboards, and EWI (electronic wind instrument). Their music has been described as "cutting a singular swath through the pop culture landscape, spreading a positive energy that makes people scratch their heads and ask questions while presenting music that's colorful to the ears." The Polyphonic Spree has released three studio albums, the first in 2002. The follow-up to 2004's critically acclaimed Together We're Heavy is the 2007 album The Fragile Army. Their songs, including the hit Light & Day/Reach for the Sun, have been featured in television appearances and film soundtracks, such as American Idol, Scrubs, Austin City Limits, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Thumbsucker, and Murderball. The Polyphonic Spree will release new recordings in summer 2011 and new Christmas recordings in fall 2011.
