No. 15: The O's -- "You've Got Your Heart"

It was late in 2008 when Taylor Young and John Pedigo, both local local music scene vets with many a successful project already under their combined belt, debuted their country folk duo known as The O's. And though the duo put out a self-titled EP in October of that year, it was in February of 2009 when the band formally released its first long-player, We Are The O's, on local label Idol Records. And that was just the beginning, really, of a whirlwind year for the duo.

In a lesser year, 2009 would have been all The O's, all the time. But, even in this busy one, the band still more than made its mark, quickly ascending to the top of the local country and folk scenes--partially because of its members' backgrounds, sure; but also because of the undeniable charm packed by the band's early catalog.

And nowhere else is that charm--one part sentimental, one part tongue-in-cheek--more evident than on We Are The O's' opening track, "You've Got Your Heart." Immediately, the table's set for what to come in the following nine tracks of the album: This is folk music, sure, but folk music played with a country swagger and a dirty, devil-may-care attitude. Maybe Pedigo and Young are actually trying here--but hell if they're gonna admit as much. And it's this near apathetic approach--a sort of "Hey, we're just messing around and making music; if you like it, awesome." attitude--that seems to lend the band's output its credibility.

Then there's just the undeniability of it all--the banjo, the acoustic guitar, the kickdrum strewn before the duo on the floor, the sweet-as-can-be lyrics, the fine vocal pairing of Pedigo's high range and Young's lows. No wonder the group's become such a favorite so quickly.

Oh, and while we're on the subject of The O's, might as well mention this: Tonight, the duo will host a free "Christmas Extravagna" showcase at Vickery Park with some help from Christy Darlington. The show starts at 10 p.m., and will feature a Christmas Tree, egg nog, and, maybe a white elephant giveaway--if, Pedigo says, enough people show up bearing gifts. And, if not?

"I dunno," Pedigo says. "We'll have a party."

Sounds about right.
