Little Honey, Lucinda Williams’ latest release, hit the streets today and, because of that, the Double Wide is hosing hosting a listening party for the new disc tonight.

No word on whether or not the great Lucinda might make an appearance--although I'd say the chances are slim to none), but the disc is worth checking out while knocking back a couple of cold ones--it's probably her best work since 1998's Car Wheels on a Gravel Road.

Featuring a host of cool guest stars (Matthew Sweet, Susanna Hoffs and Elvis Costello), Honey is short on the meandering manic-depressive dirges of Essence and long on concise, punchy rockers like “Real Love,” the album’s first single.

Perhaps Lucinda Williams’ recent optimistic bent can be attributed to her engagement to manager/producer Tom Overby. But, whatever the cause, the results speak for themselves. Even an odd cover choice, like covering AC/DC’s “It’s a Long Way to the Top” comes off as charming and raggedly right.

I can think of a lot worse ways of spending a Tuesday evening than sipping a beverage and catching up with one of the legends of alt-country. --Darryl Smyers
