One touring show and a ton of great local talent highlight this evening's musical options...
Colin Hay and Chris Trapper at the Granada Theater
Former
Men at Work frontman Colin Hay returns to the Granada Theater tonight
for what should be another evening of acoustic treatments of his former
band's numerous hits. Actually, Hay has eleven solo albums to his
credit, too, so he has other songs he could play, but there's absolutely
no chance he won't play such '80s chestnuts as "Land Down Under" and
"Who Could It Be Now?" Chris Trapper, former leader of the '90s
alternative rock act The Push Stars, opens what should be a nice show
for folks in their 40s who are out to enjoy a few memories.
Descender, Maleveller, Here Holy Spain and The Light Fantastic at Trees
Not
to be confused with the metal act from Brooklyn with the same name,
Dallas' Descender are actually a high quality alt-rock outfit with long
standing ties to the area music scene. As a matter of fact, Descender
frontman Casey Hess' involvement in the musical heritage of Dallas goes
all the way back to Deep Ellum's initial heyday, when he and his band Doosu reigned supreme. This show, and its powerful four-band bill, comes in celebration of Descender's second full-length release, Dark Water.
Joe Ely at Poor David's Pub
Singer-songwriter
Joe Ely is deservedly a Texas legend. Not only has the guy played with
everyone from Bruce Springsteen to The Clash, but he also doesn't mind
getting back to basics with an acoustic show at an intimate venue. This
is as good a chance of any to catch a guy who basically created the
alt-country genre some 30 years before it even had a name.
Bravo, Max!, Dovetail, Brumley & Gardner and Brian Martin at Andy's Basement in Denton
The
debut from local alt-country outfit Bravo, Max! is due out any day now
and the early buzz is that the album is a winner. If that's the case,
such kudos couldn't happen to a nicer group of guys. Supposedly,
Dovetail is also on the verge of releasing a record as well -- making
this the perfect occasion to check out a bevy of great, new local music.
Sore Losers at Beamers
More
proof that things are looking up for Dallas hip-hop duo Sore Losers:
The group was tapped by the folks at Jack Daniel's offshoot Gentleman
Jack to perform at this party, called Art, Beats + Lyrics,
which has already been hosted in towns like Atlanta and Houston over
the past few years. Combining visual art with live performance, this
show should prove quite the scene -- especially since, with registration, the booze is one the house tonight.
