As we gleefully approach the beginning of 35 Conferette, there's still a humpday night of music to deal with. And with two amazing guitarists in our area, as well as performances from some excellent local acts, why not get the musical festivities started tonight?
Monte Montgomery at Dan's Silverleaf
Super-guitarist Monte Montgomery
comes around our area fairly frequently, but the man's impressive
technique is always a marvel to hear and see. Voted the best acoustic
guitar player at SXSW seven years in a row, Montgomery's playing really
puts him in a class by himself. The intensity of his playing has
resulted in Montgomery breaking the neck of his instrument four times.
Thankfully, his new guitar of choice has a reinforced neck to prevent
such breakage. Anyhow, if you like to hear fingers flying up and down an
acoustic fretboard, then Dan's the place you want to be this evening.
Walter Trout and Chris Watson Band at the Granada Theater
Another
venue and another fine guitarist. This time it's Walter Trout, an
axeman who has served stints in Canned Heat and John Mayall's
Bluesbreakers. Unlike many other amazing electric guitarists, Trout
can write a song as well. Common Ground, his most recent effort, was
considered by many to be one of the best blues albums of 2010. The
album features "Song For My Guitar" and "Wrapped Up In The Blues," two
cuts that perfectly encapsulate his world.
Paco Estrada, Neff, Exit 380 and Trebuchet at Andy's Bar
This
very eclectic quadruple-bill feature the acoustic pop and soul of Paco
Estrada alongside the harder edge sounds of Exit 380 and Trebuchet. Exit
380 are currently working on the follow-up to last year's excellent
effort Cities Townies, but singer Dustin Blocker has just released his
first solo venture under the pseudonym W.A. Fite. Hopefully, fans will
get to hear quite a bit of new material from this increasingly
interesting local outfit at this show.
Bare Wires, The What Cheer? Brigade and Hardin Sweaty & The Ready To Go at Good Records
Sure
seems like the fine folks at Good Records are booking some killer shows
these days. Tonight's line-up features Oakland's Bare Wires, a grungy
trio that revels in all things garage rock. Also adding to the noise
quotient will be The What Cheer? Brigade, a 19-piece brass band from
Providence and Hardin Sweaty & The Ready To Go, a
local experimental quartet. Strange bedfellows indeed, but a better-suited bill for a record store you are unlikely to find.
Soviet, Sea Lion and The County Lines at Club Dada
Dada's Wednesday night "blog" series, where local bloggers are asked to book the festivities, continues this evening, with our own Cory Graves, also of Subservient Experiment at the helm. And he's got a fine all-local bill on his hands, featuring performances from promising young punk act Soviet, Deep Ellum outfit Sea Lion (which features members of Hats & Statues) and Grapevine act The County Lines. Admission is $5.
