The Dixie Chicks' return to touring was bound to produce some pretty incredible music, both new and old. Hell, that was even bound to include some great covers. But dropping a Lemonade cover just a week after Beyoncé had dropped her burn-it-down visual album? Now that's what we've been missing all these years without the Dixie Chicks around.
Just a few weeks into their European tour, the trio of super-talented Texas women had already been knocking out killer covers, including a killer rendition of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” and Lana Del Ray’s “Video Games.” But at Saturday night's show in Manchester, England, the Chicks performed a rousing version of their fellow Lone Star State badass's new song, "Daddy Lessons."
There will undoubtedly be an onslaught of artists attempting to cover the perfection that is Beyoncé’s latest work, many of them white artists who have no business going near a Beyoncé track. But “Daddy Lessons,” a track with overt blues and country overtones, is really a no-brainer for a country cover, and there’s really no one better suited to take it on than the Chicks.
Unfortunately, frontwoman Natalie Maines does bumble through the song’s intro – filled with a chuckle instead of Beyoncé’s quiet, “Texas, Texas,” refrain. Perhaps the Chicks learned their lesson about reminding Texans that they’re from here, considering what happened last time. Ultimately, the rendition is excellent, thanks to the Chicks’ impeccable instrumentation and delicious harmonies. It’s one that Queen Bey herself would likely approve of.
The Dixie Chicks will be returning to the States shortly for the North American leg of their tour, stopping in Dallas on Friday, August 6 at Gexa Energy Pavilion. Beyoncé, meanwhile, will be in Dallas a week from today to play AT&T Stadium as part of her Formation Tour.
