Just before 9 a.m., as a Kaufman County prosecutor got out of his car in a parking lot outside the county courthouse, he was ambushed by two gunmen who shot him five times.

That's according to a report from Fox 4. The prosecutor's name has yet to be publicly released pending notification of family members, but the Morning News reports that he had been certified as a peace officer in 1988 and "was a gun enthusiast who typically wore a gun belt. It is unknown if he was wearing the gun belt Thursday, but he almost always carried a weapon, [sources] say."

After the shooting, the gunmen fired rounds into the air to scare away witnesses as they fled in an older model dark silver Ford Taurus. The prosecutor was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Updates as they come.
