The folks at the Thin Line Film Fest in Denton, an annual affair devoted to documentaries, send word of a major premiere scheduled to open the festival on February 17: Gasland. Formerly known as Rage of Nature, as evidenced by the trailer above, this is acclaimed NYC-based director Josh Fox's highly anticipated look at the impact of natural-gas drilling on rural communities, including right here in the DFW.The North Texas premiere comes only days after Gasland makes its bow at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. It begins its week-long run in the mountains January 24, and, as the Sundance program promises, during his 24-state travels Fox "discovers toxic streams, ruined aquifers, dying livestock, brutal illnesses, and kitchen sinks that burst into flame." Tickets for Thin Line go on sale January 18, which is when organizers will release the complete list of titles for the five-day affair.
Update at 3:50 p.m.: I just spoke wih Fox, who says, indeed, "there's a pretty big segment on Dallas-Fort Worth and Denton County" in Gasland. "We shot all over Texas, but the segment on Barnett Shale focuses on the air quality report of Al Armendariz. We're in the middle of the final edit, and we're actually at the part about the Barnett Shale right now. That's one reason we're very excited about Thin Line -- because we shot a lot of the film right there." Fox says he will attend the fest, along with locals featured in the movie.
