Two weeks ago today, Mayors Tom Leppert, Mike Moncrief and Robert Cluck asked locals to "like" Walmart's Fighting Hunger Together campaign, which is doling out $1.5 million to food banks nationwide -- $1 million to the top Facebook vote-getter, and $100,000 each to the next five highest-ranking communities on the list. Don't cost ya nothing -- just as long as it takes to click "like." Boom. Done.
When the mayors sent their letter, Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington was No. 10 among the Top 100, which meant the area was out of the money. But a few days later, the D-FW-A had cracked the Top 5 -- a Christmas miracle, with San Antonio comin' up fast. But in recent days, the area has continued to slip further and further back -- so much so that I see this morning we've plunged all the way down to No. 11 -- well behind San Antonio, Houston and both Oklahoma City and Tulsa.
And so, again, I'd direct your attention to their letter, especially this part:
First, go to http://fightinghunger.walmart.com/city/Dallas-Fort-Worth-Arlington-TX and click the "Like" icon for Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington to tally your vote. But don't stop there! Forward this email to family and friends asking them to do the same. Ask your companies to engage its employees. Ask your places of worship to share with their members. Include your schools, neighborhood associations, your North Texas Facebook friends and of course, post the link on your Facebook page! In these challenging economic times, the need to fight hunger is greater than ever. Texas has the 2nd worst rate of childhood hunger in the U.S. and one in every four kids is at risk of going to bed hungry. Walmart's generous gesture can help turn this around.Voting ends in four days, nine hours, 28 minutes and counting.
