Thomas Jefferson High School's the highest-ranked high school in the land, says the issue of U.S News and World Report hitting stands today -- alas, ain't my TJ. Nope, it's the Thomas Jefferson in Fairfax County, Virginia, though there are two Dallas Independent School District high schools that make the list of 100 gold medalists in the magazine's first-ever ranking of public high schools: the School for the Talented and Gifted at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center (at No. 14) and the School of Science and Engineering at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center (at No. 18).

Of course, it was six months ago that Newsweek ranked the TAG magnet as the top public high school in the country, with the Science and Engineering magnet coming in a close second. Still, those two DISD schools did rank higher in the U.S. News poll than poor ol' Highland Park High School, which ranks 33rd on the list, which was only 22 spots below Hidalgo High School on the Texas-Mexico border. --Robert Wilonsky
