At least, that's what Darrell Jordan and his people are saying this morning--probably said it yesterday and gonna say it tomorrow too, only they weren't issuing a press release touting his bulging campaign finance report as proof that he's the "leading candidate in the May 2007 Dallas mayoral election." Which comes as stunning news to the 84 people who've already filed or plan to in the next few days and weeks; last I looked Ed Oakley, Ron Price, Don Hill, Alphonso Jackson, Gary Griffith, Phil Ritter, Bill Blaydes, Larry Duncan, Zac Crain, Raphael Anchia, Trinity Trudy, Crazy Ray and the ghost of J. Erik Jonsson were all leading canidates too. And none of them is best known as The Man Who Would Dome the Cotton Bowl, which I thought was a swell idea--but I am also a "recreational" drug user--and none of them has already lost one mayoral election. Not yet, anyway.

Looks like D.J., which I am sure nobody calls him, has already raised more than $200,000 as he vies once more for the job Mayor Laura's decided she no longer wants; since we haven't seen the finance report yet (or had our first cup of coffee or been able to talk to Brooks Love at City Hall), we have no idea who's giving him dough, but Jordan's campaign honcho Pat Cotton says in her release that the campaign's "generating broad-based support, emphasizing his ability to bring civic and business leaders together and unify the city council." There's no doubt $200,000 is a bunch of bread; Miller raised just more than $870,000 during her 2003 race against Mary Poss. In related news, our old pal and former colleague Zac Crain, also a mayoral candidate, is asking for "$7 for '07." That, my friend, is no way to get to $200,000 by mid-July the year before an election. Or mid-July 2014. But it will get ya two packs of smokes. --Robert Wilonsky
