Anybody still read the Sunday paper? OK, fine, then. Anyone clip coupons and read the circulars? (C'mon, IKEA’s catalog was shoved in many a Dallas Morning News yesterday -- today too. That's reason enough to pick up Your Daily Newspaper.) If you do and you did, you might have noticed that JC Penney insert that had 'tweens frolicking amongst a familiar backdrop: the bright yellow CD racks of Dallas’ beloved indie Good Records.
Weekday record guru CJ Davis tells Unfair Park the store does as many as four to six shoots of this sort per year, mostly for JC Penney though occasionally for other companies (such as last year’s collaboration on a Toyota Yaris campaign). “The store just looks great in photographs,” he says, adding that independent photogs also use the bright shelves and listening stations as backdrops.
I gotta say, though, the shoot did nothing to make me wanna patronize Penneys or hanker for a smart-ass text tee. It just made me wanna go buy records. --Merritt Martin
