Back in May, Phillip Jones drove from his home in Frisco eight hours west to Bledsoe, Texas, a tiny town on the New Mexico border. Why? Because Johnson, an IT guy and amateur astrophotographer, wanted to capture the coming annular eclipse in all its glory.
As you can see from the results, the trip was a success. Jones managed to snap a picture at the moment that the moon passed over the center of the sun, creating the ring of fire you see above. It's a rare event. It's been 18 years since the last such eclipse was visible in the U.S. and will be another decade before it happens again.
That was all four months ago, of course, but Jones' photos are just catching fire, so to speak, having just been picked up by The Daily Mail, among others. You can -- and should -- check out more of Jones' photos on his website.
