The Ice Bowl, about which you might hear one or two things over the next week

Go ahead, be thankful. The Dallas Cowboys ripped the New York Jets to improve to 10-1 for the first time in the franchise history. Even better, they jumped to a 21-0 lead to prevent any holiday stress. They improved to 42-0 all-time when leading by 18 points or more. Better still, it snowed. Of course, that’s the last frozen precipitation the Cowboys care to see this season.

On Thursday, the latest Game of the Year comes to Texas Stadium when 10-1 Dallas hosts the 10-1 Green Bay Packers. It’ll be the NFL’s first meeting of 10-1 teams since 1990. At stake: home-field advantage throughout the NFC Playoffs. Meaning, the Cowboys win Thursday, and they’ll most likely avoid playing in icy Lambeau Field. In case you forgot, this January will be the 40th anniversary of the Ice Bowl.

By Thursday afternoon we’ll be sick of the Brett Favre-Tony Romo comparison stories. By Thursday night we’ll know which team has the inside track to Super Bowl XLII. In related football news, despite Texas A&M’s upset of Texas later today, coach Dennis Franchione will be fired and ultimately wind up at -- ta-da! -- SMU. Call it an educated guess. --Richie Whitt
